Find your next half-birthday and the date of a chosen milestone birthday. Enter your birth date, a comparison date and the milestone age you want to check. Here, a half-birthday means six calendar months after the birthday in that year. It is a planning convention, not a legal age threshold. The tool shows the next half-birthday on or after the comparison date and a day countdown. It also shows the milestone date, including whether that birthday has already passed.
Worked example
| Birth date | Compare from | Next half-birthday | Age 30 milestone |
|---|---|---|---|
| 08/31/2000 | 09/01/2025 | 02/28/2026 | 08/31/2030 |
How it works
The birthday is first placed in a calendar year. The calculator then adds six calendar months, retaining the day number when that day exists. If it does not exist, the last day of the target month is used. The tool checks nearby birthday years and selects the first half-birthday on or after your comparison date. This matters for birthdays whose half-birthday falls in the following year.
Half-birthday = birthday anniversary + 6 calendar months, clamped to month end
Milestone birthday = birth date + target age in calendar years
Countdown = Julian day number(target) - Julian day number(comparison)
Month lengths follow the Naval Observatory Gregorian leap-year rule. Countdown days use its continuous day-number algorithm. The half-birthday definition is the convention selected for this calculator; these sources describe the underlying calendar arithmetic.
Choose a milestone and comparison date
A milestone age is a whole number of years after birth. Enter the age you want to check, rather than the number of years from today. The milestone date stays fixed when you change the comparison date. Its day count changes, letting you see how far away that birthday is or how many calendar days have passed since it.
The next half-birthday works differently because it is a recurring date. Changing the comparison date can move the result to a later recurrence. If the comparison date is exactly a half-birthday, the countdown is zero. The form rejects a comparison date before the original birth date so that the next recurrence belongs to the time on or after birth.
Month ends and leap-day birthdays
A date near the end of a month may need clamping when six months are added. For example, the worked example starts on the final day of a month whose target month has fewer days. The calculator uses the target month's final valid date. This differs from adding a fixed number of days, which can land on another calendar date.
February 29 is treated as February 28 for birthday anniversaries in non-leap years. The half-birthday calculation then starts from that anniversary. If you celebrate using a different convention, use the days-between-dates tool with your chosen celebration date to calculate its countdown. This result is intended for planning reminders and calendar events. A half-birthday or milestone here does not establish eligibility under an external rule.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my half-birthday?
This tool adds six calendar months to the birthday in the relevant year. If the same day number does not exist, it uses the last day of the target month.
Is a half-birthday the same as adding half a year of days?
Not under this tool's convention. It adds six calendar months instead of dividing the number of days in a year in half.
Can I find a milestone birthday date?
Yes. Enter a target age in completed years. The tool adds that many calendar years to the birth date and shows whether the milestone is upcoming or past.
What happens to a February 29 birthday?
In a non-leap year, the birthday anchor is February 28. The half-birthday is then six calendar months after that anchor.
